In our current exhibition - "Visual Voices: Truth Narratives," Janathel Shaw's ceramic sculpture "Future Deferred" stands quietly by the window and is surrounded by natural light.
This large portrait busts is in the likeness of one of Janathel's favorite
students and her son. But as you take a closer look, you will see sgrafitto etched tattoos of Jordan Davis and Michael Brown on the neck and a small hooded figure of twelve-year-old Tamir Rice in the verso of the head; those who died in the shootings.
Janathel felt compelled to create this sculpture. All their deaths hit her on a personal level. Her pieces are bold, weighty, a little disconcerting and reflective of what is occurring in our society; especially from an African American scope.
